Gilles Villeneuve makes his Ferrari debut at the Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park, Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.
Gilles was able to wrap-up the Formula Atlantic Championship with a win in Quebec City two weeks earlier. The next day Gilles and his manager flew to Italy to sign a two-year contract with Ferrari and would make his Ferrari debut in the Canadian GP at Mosport. Villeneuve later remarked that: "If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari."
Villeneuve's arrival was prompted by Ferrari driver Niki Lauda quitting the team at the 1977 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport having already clinched his second championship with the Italian team. Villeneuve retired from the race after sliding off the track on another competitor's oil.
With polesitter Mario Andretti retiring with a blown engine, Jody Scheckter inherited the win in the Walter Wolf entry.
