Greg Moore of Maple Ridge, BC, wins the CART series "U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota" at Michigan Speedway. The race saw a record 63 lead changes due to the draft of the new Handford device, and was won by Moore after a thrilling battle in the last five laps with Jimmy Vasser, Alex Zanardi and Scott Pruett. Other Canadians in the field, Moore's Forsythe Racing teammate Patrick Carpentier finished 8th, followed by Paul Tracy driving for Team KOOL Green in 9th.
On a tragic note, three fans are killed and six others wounded by flying debris from the car of Adrian Fernandez, during a 200 MPH crash.
