Gil de Ferran, driving the Pennzoil sponsored Jim Hall Reynard/Mercedes, finished 7.959 seconds ahead of Paul Tracy of Toronto in the Newman Haas Racing Lola/Ford, to win the CART "Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey" at Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey, California, USA. The other Canadian in the field, polesitter Jacques Villeneuve, finished 11th in the Player's/Team Green entry after leading the first 28 laps.
